The Noise 10.06
There are many pleasurable, even sometimes ecstatic songs here; especially nice are the tuneful slow build of “Serpentine,” and the grandiose “Memorial Day,” as well as the subdued “A Brooklyn Bridge” and the swirling “Palomino.” These are also some more highly charged pieces, reminiscent of Fripp, such as the vigorous “Shift.” At times a song like the mellifluous and bitter “Grownup” reminds me of a Thirteenth Floor Elevator’s song like the all-encompassing “Will the Circle Remain Unbroken,” and electronic drip-drop of “Sleepwalkers” brings to mind a Mission of Burma song like “Trem Two.” And is that an Eno influence I hear in back of “Supergraduated”? Some of the more ambient portions of this album are so subtle that they sometimes threaten to collapse under their own lack of weight. But when the songs work they present us with small marvels of craftsmanship. (Francis DiMenno)
